In an in-depth examination of youth sports, Michael Messner immerses himself

in the youth sport organizations that serve his own children. Through the use of

multiple data sources including interviews, thickly described observations, as well

as demographic information about coaches and volunteers, Messner offers readers

a clear understanding of the social structures and gender dynamics of the American

Youth Sport Organization (AYSO) and Little League Baseball/Softball (LLB/S)

leagues in South Pasadena, California. Because of his accessible writing, concise

analyses, and insightful conclusions, I recommend Messner’s book to scholars

interested in learning more about gender issues in youth sport programs and to a

broader audience of those who may be interested in coaching youth sport.
